Port Aransas and South Texas have a lot to offer visitors in every season throughout the year. Every fall, Winter Texans and snowbirds travel from the cold north to spend the winter here, while summer visitors come to enjoy the emerald-green water. But when is the best time to visit? It’s a question we get asked frequently, so we opened it up to our Facebook friends to find out what they think.
Our Friends Have Spoken — the Results are In!
- Most people prefer to visit in fall and winter, because they like the cooler temperatures.
- So far no votes for summer, which is surprising because it’s our busiest time of the year.
- Only a few votes for the spring.
Here are some things to consider when choosing to visit:
Visiting Port A in the Winter
Surface Temps: Mid 50’s – Mid 70’s
Water Temps: Low 60’s
During the winter months, South Texas becomes a favorite destination for Winter Texans and Snowbirds who flock to our sandy beaches from the cold winters of the north and east. It’s no surprise why. During the winter months, our air temperatures are usually between 55-75 degrees, depending on the day. In fact, our weather closely mirrors that of Tampa, FL which is positioned almost directly across the Gulf from Port Aransas. Water temperatures are usually around 60 degrees. That’s too cold for swimming, but there’s still plenty to do.

Winter is cooler and quiet, but there’s still plenty to do. Check out the following:

- Tour the Amos Rehabilitation Keep to See Sea Turtles and Other Marine Wildlife
- Enjoy the Annual Whooping Crane Festival in February
Visiting Port A in the Fall
Surface Temps: Mid 70’s – Upper 80’s
Water Temps: Low to Mid 70’s
Fall is a great time to visit! The busy tourist season ends with back-to-school, making it easy to get a table at your favorite Port A spot or find a parking spot on the beach. The pace is slower, while the weather and water are both warm. The Gulf will be comfortable for swimming up until the end of October, and temperatures are between 80-90 degrees. Fall is a time when locals come out to enjoy the cooling weather and uncrowded beaches, making it a great time for anyone to visit.

Visiting Port A During the Spring
Surface Temps: Upper 70’s – Mid 80’s
Water Temps: Low to Mid 70’s
Spring is an especially beautiful time of year to visit. Locals find the weather to be the best of the year, with temperatures between 75-85 degrees, and water temperatures around 70 degrees. Most locals find the water to be swimmable starting in mid-late April. The sunshine and warmer temps make Port Aransas a popular tourist destination for Spring Break, which kicks off the tourist season. Port Aransas has quite a few Spring Break events, while neighboring Corpus Christi has its fair share of events too.

Spring is a great time to visit. Don’t pass up these events:

Visiting Port A in the Summer
Surface Temps: Upper 80’s – Mid 90’s
Water Temps: Low to Mid 80’s
Summer is by far our busiest season at the park. From June to August, we’re typically completely full, so if summer is your preferred season, be sure to book your stay early. Summer is when the Gulf is the warmest throughout the year, with water temps hovering in the low-80s. Going for a dip from Pioneer’s beachfront access feels like swimming in bath water. Surface temperatures during the summer are usually right around 90-degrees. It’s the warmest time of the year, but most people that visit during the summer beat the heat by taking a dip in the water or heading into town to get ice cream.
Fun Activities in Port Aransas, TX During the Summer
There’s never a dull moment when you visit Port Aransas. Here are some of the fun things to do during the summer:
- Visit local restaurants for live music
- Birdwatching at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center
- Get a private fishing charter to go deep sea fishing
- Take a tour of the area waterways aboard the Scarlet Lady
- Show your kids what it’s like to be a buccaneer aboard the Red Dragon Pirate Ship
